Featured Book:    The Lightning Thief     by Rick Riordan        ★★★★★

The Lightning Thief is one of the best books I have ever read!  It is about a boy in current times who figures out that the Greek gods are still around and thriving, but if the gods are around so are the evil villains!  The boy figures out he is related to a character in Greek mythology and he has to go to Camp Halfblood, a safe place for descendents of Gods where the villains cannot go. This book was very exciting and it's sequel (The Sea of Monsters) is now out.

Featured Book:    The Warriors Series  by Erin Hunter        ★★★★1/2

The Warriors Series is about a house cat going to live with warrior cats who live wild out in the open.  In the books, the medicine cat tells the leader of the clan that "fire will save the forest."  The housecat's name is Firepaw, and he becomes an apprentice training to become a warrior.  The books have great detail and they are very exciting.  The books are scary at times and sad at times but very good.  There is a new series out now called Warriors:  The New Prophecy -- watch for a review of that series to come soon!

Featured Author:    Tamora Pierce

Tamora Pierce is an amazing author who has written so many very good books.  Most of her books are for older kids but there are some that younger kids can read like the Protector of the Small series.  Her books seem to be all fantasy adventure books.

Featured Book:    Peter and the Shadow Thieves  by Dave Barry and Ridley Pierson        ★★★★

Peter and the Shadow Thieves is the sequel to Peter and the Star Catchers that came out last year.  It is a little confusing but both of these books are the prequels to the Peter Pan story -- they basically tell the story of how Peter Pan ended up on Never Land, who the Lost Boys are, and how Captain Hook lost his hand.  I loved both of these books, but Peter and the Shadow Thieves definitely seemed a lot more intense and was pretty scary in a lot of parts, so I think it is definitely for older kids.

Featured Author:    Mary Pope Osborne

Mary Pope Osborne is best known for her Magic Tree House series of books.  But she has written a lot of other great books as well.  My favorites are her books retelling the story of the Odyssey, an ancient Greek story about a man named Odysseus and his part in the war at Troy and then his attempt to get back home after the war.  There are 6 books in this series, which is called Tales from the Odyssey.

Featured Book:    The Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathon Stroud            ★★★★★

The Amulet of Samarkand is probably the best book I have read so far this summer.  It is about a boy named Nathaniel who becomes a magician's apprentice, but everyone thinks he is too lazy and dumb to become a good magician.  People don't know, however, that he studies by himself in his room and learns spells way beyond his years.  Finally, he summons a djinni named Bartimaeus who he commands to steal the amulet of Samarkand because he is mad at the amulet's owner.  This book is great.

Featured Book:    Maximum Ride by James Patterson            ★★★★★

Maximum Ride is the first kids' book written by James Patterson, a very successful adult author.  It is about six kids who grew up in a lab as part of an experiment.  They are 98% human but also 2% bird!  They have wings and are able to fly and some have other magic powers.  In the book, they have escaped from the lab and are living peacefully by themselves.  Erasers, part human and part wolf creatures, are chasing them and trying to capture them and bring them back to the lab.  This book is an amazing read -- it is incredibly exciting in parts, but also super touching in other parts.

Featured Author:    Avi

Avi has written so many children's books and they are all so different and wonderful!  Some of his books, such as Ragweed, are told from the point of view of animals and those books are often light and quick reads.  Other books by Avi are serious such as Nothing But the Truth, which is about a boy who refuses to stand up to sing the national anthem.  And Avi also writes fantasy or historical fiction books like The Book With No Words.  If you haven't yet read any Avi books, go try one out today!

Featured Book:    Eldest    by Christopher Paolini        ★★★★★

Eldest is the sequel to Eragon and describes Eragon's continuing adventures.  In this book, Eragon goes to the Elves capitol and learns many more skills and then Eragon and the varden, a collection of people opposed to the Empire, finally goes to war against the Empire.  In the midst of battle, a new rider appears.  This book is really cool because it has lots of new made up languages -- the magic language, dwarvish, and elvish.  I liked this book probably even more than Eragon.

Featured Author:    Anthony Horowitz

Anthony Horowitz has written two different series of mysteries: The Alex Rider Adventures and The Diamond Brothers Mysteries.  His books are wonderful mystery novels filled with incredibly exciting adventure.  The Alex Rider Adventures are definitely for older kids because there is more violence in them.  The Diamond Brothers Mysteries are about two boys -- one of which is a private detective but not very smart and the other is not a detective but he is very smart -- who solve mysteries together.  The Alex Rider Adventures are about a boy who becomes part of MI6, the British spy force and solves amazing international mysteries.

Featured Author:    Shannon Hale

Shannon Hale is a wonderful author whose books tell great stories.  Some of her books include The Goose Girl and Enna Burning, two stories about two girls who go on many adventures -- but not in the way you think!  They don't go on adventures like fighting dragons, rather their adventures deal with their day to day lives.  Her most recent book is The Princess Academy,a book about a girl who goes to a school to learn manners but instead she has an amazing adventure and learns many different things.  All of Shannon Hale's books tell fantastic stories and she is one of my favorite all time authors.

Featured Book:    The Penultimate Peril (The Series of Unfortunate Events, Book 12) by Lemony Snicket    ★★★★

The Penultimate Peril is the 12th book in the Series of Unfortunate Events.  It is the second to last book in the series but the 13th has not yet come out.  In this book, the Baudelaire kids go to Hotel Denouement where they work as concierges.  They overhear many evil plots while helping guests at the hotel.  They try to save the hotel from disaster, but unfortunately, they do not!  This book is one of Lemony Snicket's best and is as depressing as usual.  The first book in the series is called  The Bad Beginning.
